No!Spec

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Cat from Designers-Who-Blog.com turned me on to a site called NO!SPEC which sums up so many sickening feelings I get when I am talking to new customers or browsing ridiculous ads on craigslist. The point of the site is to encourage designers to know their self worth. It is simply not fair for someone to say "show me what you can do" and then say "no I think I'll pass" with no regard for designer's time. Everyone, even beginning designers, deserve to be paid something for their time.

Cat and I were debating whether or not unpaid internships fit into this catergory as well. In my opinion it is total crap and basically the same slap in the face as spec work. It's not too cool of these big bourjois design firms to act like they are giving you the opportunity of a lifetime by "letting" you do their clients work for free, while they reap the $cash money$. All the while hanging the threat of not hiring you over your head.

What do you think?

I totally agree with you.

From the minute that my friends have found out what I'm currently studying... I began to get calls and e-mails asking for "assistance" on brouchures, e-mail fliers, T-shirt designs, etc....

When I mentioned a fee-- they acted like that was rediculous... I should be happy to do this for them to add to my portfolio.... to get the "experience".

However-- where do you draw the line?

Shame on corporations for getting away with "Unpaid" Internships.

This is very similar to when I was working on my undergrad degree in Advertising at TCU and Texas Tech-- and the professor would draw from (and literally STEAL) -- students original work, call it their own concept-- and then reap a wonderful reward in the amount that they would charge the client.... all the while-- the students NEVER got paid; NEVER got any form of credit for their original ideas/artwork/writing/concepts.

Not Cool.

This is Student Slavery....
Nothing more.

It's certainly time for a change. This has gone on TOO LONG!!!
